Buying Guide

How to Choose an RF Power Meter or Sensor

Match the instrument to your measurement application and frequency requirement.

Power Meter vs. Power Sensor

A power meter is the benchtop display unit — it reads measurements from a connected power sensor. Most sensors connect via an 8482-series or similar interface. If you already own a compatible meter, adding a sensor is the cost-effective path.

Frequency Coverage

Standard sensors cover 10 MHz to 18 GHz — sufficient for most RF lab work. Waveguide sensors (Q8486A, R8486D) extend to 26.5–50 GHz for microwave and radar applications. USB sensors like the U2001H offer PC-controlled measurements up to 6 GHz.

Peak vs. Average Power

CW (average) sensors measure steady-state power and are the most common choice. Peak power sensors — such as the Boonton 57518 or Keysight 84814A — capture pulsed and modulated signals including radar, TDMA, and burst transmissions where peak-to-average ratio matters.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an RF power meter used for?

An RF power meter measures the power level of a radio frequency signal in watts or dBm. It is used for transmitter output verification, amplifier gain and compression testing, antenna VSWR characterization, and production line power level testing. When paired with a calibrated RF power sensor, a power meter provides traceable, accurate power measurements across a wide frequency range.

What is the difference between an RF power meter and an RF power sensor?

An RF power meter is the readout instrument — it processes and displays the measured power value. An RF power sensor is the measurement transducer that connects directly to the signal being measured and converts RF power to a DC signal for the meter to read. Most sensors are not interchangeable between meter brands — always verify compatibility before purchasing a sensor separately.

What is a peak power sensor and when do I need one?

A peak power sensor measures the instantaneous peak power of pulsed, modulated, or burst RF signals — unlike average power sensors which only measure mean power. Peak sensors are required for radar pulse testing, TDMA and CDMA waveform analysis, and pulsed amplifier characterization where peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is critical. Micro Precision stocks several peak power sensors from Boonton, Gigatronics, and Keysight.

Are your RF power meters and sensors ISO/IEC 17025 calibrated?

Yes. Every RF power meter and power sensor from Micro Precision undergoes full ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration verification before shipping. Sensors include updated calibration factor tables across the rated frequency range. All units are NIST traceable and backed by our 30-day return policy.
