About Our Inventory

About Our RF Signal Generator Inventory

Everything you need to know about our stock, quality standards, and the right unit for your application.

Analog vs. Vector Signal Generators

Analog RF generators produce CW signals with AM, FM, and PM modulation — the right choice for receiver sensitivity testing, component characterization, and general-purpose RF work. Vector signal generators (VSGs) add IQ modulation for digitally-modulated waveforms like LTE, 5G NR, and Wi-Fi 6. If your device-under-test uses digital communications, you need a VSG. The Keysight E4438C and E8267D cover this role in our current inventory.

9 kHz to 50 GHz — Keysight & Anritsu

Our inventory spans 9 kHz to 50 GHz across analog, vector, and microwave signal generators. Low-frequency coverage starts with the Keysight N5171B (9 kHz–3 GHz) for general test applications, while the Keysight 83650B and 83651A reach 50 GHz for satellite, radar, and millimeter-wave R&D. All units come from Keysight and Anritsu — two of the most trusted names in RF test and measurement.

ISO/IEC 17025 Verified, Every Unit

Every RF signal generator we sell — new, refurbished, or rental — is fully tested and verified in our ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory before shipment. Units ship with NIST-traceable calibration certificates and a 30-day return policy. As an authorized reseller, we also carry factory calibration data for Keysight instruments. Buying Guide

How to Choose the Right RF Signal Generator

Match the generator to your test application using these key parameters.

Frequency Range & Headroom

Match the generator's maximum frequency to your device-under-test, then add at least 20% headroom — phase noise specs drift at the band edge. For 5G NR sub-6 GHz testing, 6 GHz coverage is the minimum. Satellite and radar applications typically require 18–50 GHz. The Keysight 83650B (50 GHz) and Anritsu 68167C (40 GHz) cover the upper end of our current inventory.

Phase Noise & Output Power

Phase noise determines how cleanly the generator reproduces a signal — critical for receiver sensitivity testing and PLL characterization. Look for −115 dBc/Hz or better at 20 kHz offset for precision applications. The Keysight E8257D PSG delivers −119 dBc/Hz at 20 kHz, making it one of the lowest-noise analog generators in its class. Output power range (typically −130 dBm to +20 dBm) determines how closely you can simulate real-world signal conditions.

Automation & Interface

All instruments in our inventory support GPIB for legacy automated test systems. Newer Keysight models (N5171B, E4438C) also include LAN (LXI) and USB for modern test rack integration. Confirm SCPI command support and compatibility with your software — LabVIEW, MATLAB Instrument Control Toolbox, or Python with pyvisa. GPIB-to-USB adapters are available for older units that need to integrate with modern PCs.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an RF signal generator used for?

An RF signal generator produces a stable, precision radio frequency output used to test, stimulate, or troubleshoot RF and microwave circuits, receivers, antennas, and complete systems. Common applications include receiver sensitivity testing, EMC pre-compliance, modulation quality analysis, component characterization, and automated production test. The instrument is essential in any RF lab or production environment where controlled signal input is required.

What is the difference between an analog and a vector signal generator?

An analog RF generator produces CW (continuous wave) and AM/FM/PM-modulated signals — suitable for most traditional RF testing tasks. A vector signal generator (VSG) adds IQ modulation capability, enabling generation of digitally-modulated waveforms such as LTE, 5G NR, Wi-Fi 6, OFDM, and QPSK. If your device-under-test is a digital communications component or system, a VSG is required. Our Keysight E4438C and E8267D are both VSGs currently in stock.

What frequency range do I need for 5G testing?

For 5G NR FR1 (sub-6 GHz) testing, a signal generator with coverage to at least 6 GHz is required — the Keysight E4438C (250 kHz–6 GHz) handles this range. For 5G NR FR2 (mmWave) testing in the 24–40 GHz bands, a generator capable of 40 GHz or higher is needed. The Keysight E8257D (40 GHz) and E8267D (44 GHz) are the most common choices for mmWave testing and are both available in our inventory.

Are your refurbished RF signal generators ISO/IEC 17025 calibrated?

Yes. Every refurbished RF signal generator from Micro Precision Test Equipment undergoes full functional verification and calibration in our ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory before shipment. Each unit ships with a NIST-traceable calibration certificate, a warranty, and is backed by our 30-day return policy. Contact us for calibration documentation specific to any model in our inventory.

Can I rent an RF signal generator instead of buying?

Yes. Micro Precision Test Equipment offers rental options on select RF signal generators — ideal for short-term test campaigns, proof-of-concept projects, or situations where capital budget is constrained. Rental availability varies by model. Contact our team at +1 530-268-1860 or submit a quote request to check current availability and lead time.
